Huevo’s Adoption
With the transport of February 28, 2010, Galgo Huevo has arrived from Scooby, in the shelter from Greyhounds in Need Netherlands (GINN).
We got to know Huevo as a friendly and social boy. Hi immediately became friends with the other dogs. On the 3rd of July Huevo was adopted by his new family and after a short while we got the following story by mail:
“Now that Huevo (we call him Bueno now) is living with us for almost two weeks, I’ll send you, as promised, an update about how he is doing.
The ride home was very calm, Bueno lied down in the car. Our son was waiting on the lawn with the other dogs, so that they could get acquainted outside. Bueno however, did not want to get out of the car, so we had to carry him. Once outside on the street, he was prepared to walk up to the dogs and meet them. I went inside the house with the smaller dogs and the men went for a walk with the big guys. After the walk they came inside the house and a huge problem occurred: Bueno couldn’t walk on the plywood floor. Bambi on ice was nothing, compared to this. He got all stressed and he froze. At that moment we realized how big he is and how small our (fortunately temporary) living room is. With a lot of effort we brought Huevo in front of the TV and I had the idea of fetching his blanket from the car. Immediately, he recognized the blanket as a save place and he dared to lie down. Since he didn’t dare to walk, we placed a bowl of water right beside him. He was really scared by all of this, which is very understandable: new people, new house, new dogs. After a while he began to look around a little and than we dragged/carried him to the garden. He cheered up immediately, because he didn’t slip here. He explored the garden and he especially liked the mirror (like Narcissus), but when we went inside again, he wanted to come along with us. So we dragged/carried him to his place again. The poor thing couldn’t choose where he wanted to be, so we tried to guess what he wished, and dragged/carried him over there. Luckily, the next day we came to the idea of placing all the old garden cushions in a row on the floor, to make a path to the garden. And so he dared to go explore the rest of the house and go into the garden by himself. My husband thought of an old rug that was lying in the shed. With a high pressure sprayer we turned it into a new rug and thus the biggest part of the living room is now walkable area for Bueno. He even dares walking on the plywood floor now. It’s just a matter of getting used to it. I think I dare to say that Bueno is very happy and satisfied and we are also very happy with him.
On the third day, he wagged his tail when we came downstairs and now he performes a greeting dance when we come downstairs. He is completely housebroken, he can be alone for a while (yesterday we even went to an amusementpark) and he behaves himself as a good boy. Every once in a while he growls to the other dogs, but he let’s himself get chased away by our Poodle Kim, who also challenges him to play. In the garden he also behaves himself in such a way that my husband opens the garden door before he goes to work, so that the dogs can walk in and out while I’m still in bed. On the right side and in the back we have high fences, on the left side there is a low fence. But our neighbour also has a high fenced garden with no entry, so even if Bueno would jump the low fence, he will still be locked up in their garden. My bed is on the garden side of the house, so if Bueno barkes at the neighbour cat, I speak to him. Smart as he is, he looks up to me.
Bueno holds on to his habits. We bought a thick cushion for him, but he wouldn’t lie down on it, untill we covered it with his blanket. And when my daughter was coming to visit I replaced the cushion, so she could put the Maxi-Cosi by her feet, Bueno got angry and started to scratch the cushion and blanket: Put it back!
Between my eldest grandson and Bueno their is a little tension. When Bueno lies on his cushion, he finds it difficult when Tim walks by all the time. Naturally, I keep focused on him all the time. Bueno has to accept Tim as a person in a higher postion, on the other hand, it is a bit narrow and it is, after all, his cushion. Luckily, we will be moving back to our own house shortly, there we will have our bigger living room and there will be less confrontation. And Tim only spends a couple of hours a week with us. And of course, the longer Bueno is living with us, the more relaxed he will be. A visit from adults is also difficult for him. At first he greets them politely, but if two people stand up at the same time, he starts to growl or bark a little. But he takes a correction very well and seems even glad with it. He lies down immediately.
Well, this is quite a story, and we came to the conclusion that we are very happy with our new companion and I think he is with us.
Many greetings,
Renee.”
Of course we were very happy with this very nice story. Another dog has found his new, loving home. Another happy ending!
