MARS Arévalo

MARS is an international animal food processing company with numerous subsidiaries, one of which is located in Arévalo, some 30 km from Medina del Campo. This past summer, Scooby was invited to a party in celebration of the Arévalo subsidiary's 10th anniversary. Of course, Scooby congratulates MARS and is very grateful for having been given the opportunity of introducing ourselves, of promoting the homeless animals in our shelter, and of presenting our goals to a wider audience. Many heartfelt thanks to MARS as well for the generous food donations!

Many staff members were at the party, along with their wives, husbands, children, grandchildren and grandparents, making the guest list a real family affair. The venue was very pleasant, the weather was good, and everyone was in a party mood. In short, MARS succeeded in giving us all a wonderful day!

A number of special events were organised, one of which was a traditional Spanish horse riding show that I was particularly impressed with. Following this show a mock bull fight was staged. Using a fake bull, the horses and their riders showed off their prowess.

This display was pretty much of a shock to me, not being Spanish. The whole time, parents were teaching their little children to shout "Olé!" each time the rider was able to stab the fake bull with a lance. With sinking heart, I left. While walking across the field with our Scooby promotion galgos, it hit home how very much time and commitment it will take to eradicate these deeply-rooted Spanish traditions in which animals are victimised. Scooby's presence at the celebration was intended to heighten awareness to the plight of so many animals in Spain and to educate the people in how to better care for the pets and animals in their care. Witnessing the reactions of adults and children alike to the mock bull fight, made me feel as if I had gone back centuries in time. There is still so much to be accomplished...

There were, however, some encouraging highlights. For instance, the children who were eager to know about Scooby, while they had fun petting our dogs. And parents who took the time to tell their children about Scooby's animal protection work. In addition, there were several young men who were appalled at the original and horrific pictures of atrocities committed against animals in Fermín's photo album.

All in all, it was an enjoyable and interesting day. Scooby wishes to extend many thanks to all the party guests, to the MARS company, and to its manager, who gladly wore our Scooby T-shirt. Each of them contributed to making this such a successful event.

Note: Unfortunately there are no pictures available anymore of this nice day. Due to a problem with the camera, all photos got lost. For this we apologize sincerely.
