Middle Ages Festival in Cuellar

The annual festival, entirely in the style of the Middle Ages took place in a park in La Huerta del Duque Cuellar – August 2009.

Every year a procession with a variety of people completely dressed up in style of the Middle Ages, collects at the Cuellar Castle and walk to the local park accompanied by horses and their riders. For this occasion, also the park has been totally transformed in the style of the Middle Ages: little stalls to buy and eat traditional Spanish food, jewelry, antiques, Middle Age music, showings of old trades, old fashioned games played by the young and old. In the evening, the whole park was lighted very spherically, some belly dancers showed their arts. Characteristic of this festival is the very cozy atmosphere and a lot of people from surrounding villages and cities pay a visit to Cuellar to enjoy these festivities.

Scooby´s Carolina lives in Cuellar and she has been a volunteer for many years with Scooby. Each year a lot of (stray)dogs and/or cats are taken in by her and go to Scooby in order to give them a chance for adoption. Carolina arranged for our participation in the procession. It was very special this year because for the first time in history, not only people and horses but also dogs were present in the pageant, namely Galgos!

We passed through the park several times, paying visits at the little stalls, while making sure visitors were aware of our presence. It is astonishing to see how the people in this country look at our "beloved Galgos" as just "an article to use".

Also other animals were present in the park: there were demonstrations of birds of prey, donkeys and camels to ride to take a tour through the park… This was perplexing to me to see the donkeys and camels being used as an vehicle for a pleasant tour.

Looking back at this event, it was a very social and useful Scooby promotion day in Cuellar!
