Over the last 10 years, Scooby has grown considerably both in size and in our network of volunteers from several nationalities that help answer emails, translate updates and manage the virtual adoption program. In addition, a steady stream of volunteer workers from all over the world help Scooby on a daily basis. Because of this support, Scooby is able to tackle another problem that is effecting animals all over the world – factory farming and the destruction of the environment.
The overall objective of this new project is to construct an educational centre on the grounds of Scooby. The centre will offer a small scale lecture program and provide learning materials to schools, the local community, authorities and anyone else that visits the shelter. On a small scale Scooby has taken in ducks, geese, battery hens, sheep, goats, pigs, ponies and many other farm and working animals.
Our centre offers seminars, advice sessions and open days to the public, in our centre or on location.
Our objectives are:
- to make people aware of the importance of spaying and neutering, microchipping and veterinary supervision regarding companion animals
- to teach people the advantages of having a pet in general, and especially to promote the Galgos as the perfect pets they are, since in Spain, they are considered as being unsuitable as companion pets
- to teach about the suffering of factory farmed animals, inform about more animal friendly alternatives, and give them a tour through our animal farm and introduce the people to our livestock as living creatures in a free environment
- to build awareness of environmental issues and alternatives that can help such as recycling, saving energy and water.
There is a lot of pioneering to do on this matter and we can only act on a small scale of the global awareness, but it has to start somewhere. There is still a lot of work to do and to prepare. On our news page we will keep you updated about our progress. If you are interested in our project, for participation or sponsoring, please contact us. We also offer the possibility to support our project by virtually adopting our farm animals, please visit the Virtual Adoption section on our website.
